Majors Minute:

CHOO CHOO TO CHARLESTON !!
Miss Sandi and I have ridden the rails to far places of the country and she suggested we do the same to the Interment Ceremony of the CSS Hunley crew on April 17, 2004 in Charleston. I agree, and we are going to do just that! We believe this will add a "period" flavor to the excursion as well as offer a relaxing ride. Conver-sations with others about this endeavor has been well received, with Phill and Karen planning to join us, and others considering the possibility. I'd like to extend an invitation to anyone who would like a taste of riding the rails with us.

The following itinerary is a sample of what we are considering and certainly is not cast in stone. This example schedule has us arriving in Charleston on Friday 4/16/2004, allows us a few days of site seeing after the ceremonies and returns us to Rochester on Wednesday 4/21/2004. The inclusion of the site seeing is because many of us have not had the opportunity to travel the Historic Charleston area, which is rich in Revolutionary period as well as War Between the States and later times.

Here's a possible train schedule:
ROC = Rochester
NYP = New York City Penn

Central Station
CHS = Charleston, SC.

Train 284 leaves ROC 7:37am 4/15/2004, arrive NYP 2:30pm
Train 97 leaves NYP 7:01pm 4/15/2004, arrive CHS 7:57am 4/16/2004
Train 98 leaves CHS 8:14pm 4/20/2004, arrive NYP 10:30am 4/21/2004
Train 283 leaves NYP 1:45pm 4/21/2004, arrive ROC 8:18pm

The plan is to share the renting of transportation vehicle(s) upon arrival.

OK, now the big question: HOW MUCH ?

The following are based on fares/accommodations for TWO (2) ADULTS and are not discounted for senior, AAA, or bonus coupon rates.

1) Reserved Coach the whole trip: $388.00
2) Reserved Coach between ROC and NYP both ways and Viewliner std sleeper between NYP and CHS both ways: $602.00
3) Reserved Coach between ROC and NYP both ways and Deluxe sleeper between NYP and CHS both ways: $1013.00

There is also a business class between ROC and NYP but you can check that yourself.

Reserved Coach does NOT include the price of meals or snacks, all sleeper accommodations DO include meals and snacks (not alcoholic beverages).

I'd be happy to answer any questions I can and future updates will be posted in these pages when possible.

1.  Registration is set up in 1/2 hour blocks from 2 pm to 10 pm on Friday; and 7 am to 10 am on Saturday.  Tim would like 2 people per 1/2 hour.

2. Breastworks need to be set up.

3. Artillery camp layout needs to be set.

4. Unit camp layout needs to be set.

5. Saturday nite dance needs to be set up including lights and lanterns; and punch needs to be made.

6. Sunday cleanup up is needed.

Remember, sponsoring units and staff may set up on Thursday after 5pm.

Note from Bedford Light: As a co-sponsor of this event we have not contributed much in years past. Perhaps this year we can help little more. Please contact Tim Bucknam at HTBuck@aol.com if interested.

Captains Corner:

Liberty is July 26-27th.
Gettysburg is August 8, 9 and 10th, Those still able to attend please try to get there by Thursday, August 7th as you may not be able to drive into camp after Aug 7th and we need to be inspected on August 7th to participate in Friday's battle. For those that cannot make this event because of the date change I have sent in a request for your registration to be refunded and await the refund. I will return your monies as soon as I receive them.

I have the following listed to attend Gettysburg:

Military
Major Craig McCann
Captain Mike Karnitz
1st Sgt. Roland Meiers

(breveted Lt.) Cpl. Melayne Karnitz -(breveted Sgt.)
Pvt. Jim Miller
Pvt. Dawn Miller
Pvt. Lauren Chapman
Pvt. Chris Chapman
Pvt. Carter Chapman
Pvt. Bob Henry
Pvt. Dave Robillard
Civilians
Miss Sandi McCann
Miss Andrea Meiers
Miss LuAnn Henry

Hamlin Beach is August 15-17th

Also, I had the pleasure to attend Camp Meiers in Albion, NY. over the July Fourth Holiday even though I had to work Saturday Night, I was able to camp Friday and Sunday nights.  Sgt. Meiers has a great piece of land to camp on, plenty of open, flat ground. I would like to propose that next year we make this an event for our unit. We will teach/learn how to load and clean small arms, long arms and drill on any cannon that are there. We will be able to fire all and any weapons we bring. We will even have Fireworks, I think that will appeal to some of our younger members. I will discuss this at Hamlin Beach with the unit. If the ambition bug bites us we may even build breast works and gun pits this fall. Anyone interested in helping please contact me or Sgt. Meiers.

Some reminders for camping in hot weather from Miss LuAnn.

I thought I would share these ideas with you. Some are ideas you have shared with me. They are reminders that will help us to stay safe and healthy during our summer events. With the rescheduling of Gettysburg due to the "rainy spring conditions", we don’t know what to expect from the weather or environment . We can pray that it doesn’t get into the 90’s or above and that we have comfortable, cool days and bug-free, warm nights.

Some tips:

A separate cooler for drinks and ice.

I always have containers of water frozen solid.  As the ice melts in the containers, I have cold, clean water to drink.

Fruit juices are good to have on hand for a cool refreshing drink and to boost the nutrients needed to keep alert.

Sports drinks for those who can handle the high sodium and sugar content.

Keep baking soda on hand.  When someone is dehydrating, give them a glass of water with baking soda mixed in, followed by several glasses of plain water.  This will help bring up the sodium content in their body.  Must be careful and know the person's medical needs.  The same applies to sports drinks as mentioned above.

Use more salt in cooking and/or the snacks you eat.  Trail mixes are great for snacking.  I have included three receipts for trail mixes.  Beef jerky is another great source of extra salt and a more authentic, period style food for snacking.

Fresh fruits and vegetables make great snacks and/or light lunches.

Remember the sunscreen to prevent sunburn!  I recently read an article about how people use sunscreen and figure they are safe to be in the sun longer.  The medical profession is now worried that skin cancer will be on the rise since people are staying exposed for longer periods of time.  So remember to reapply after after a period of time as sunscreen can wear off and be absorbed.

Wide-brimmed straw hats breath the heat out and keeps the head cool.

Keep a wet, cool cloth on top of your head or even a bag of ice under the cap.

Insect repellent may be useful.  I have heard Avon's Skin So Soft works well to keep mosquitoes away.  Remember certain perfumes and deodorants will attract bugs.

Please keep an eye on others and help them to stay cool too.  Share any ideas or recommendations you may have.  After all we are one big happy family who cares for each other.  And this is one way of doing so.

The Emancipation Proclamation

What did it really do? There are a lot of teachers that state it Freed the Slaves. From all that I have read it seems that it was actually a very peculiar document..
