The Living History event at Gettysburg was one of those events that are difficult to categorize – enjoyable or not. I suppose it all depends upon which day (or part thereof) that you consider. We had Nigel Hurst, our Scottish-born friend from England, staying with us, and he joined in the festivities. He had a great time, even allowing for the dousing we received through most of Saturday. In the late afternoon the weather bucked up somewhat, the skies cleared and the sun came out to begin drying the canvas, and we all took a stroll down to the Bedford Light Artillery marker on Confederate Avenue. My one regret about that is that we did not take a photograph of us all around the marker. Sunday dawned bright and clear, and we gently broiled from mid-morning on. I am not complaining – that was definitely preferable to drowning like the previous day. And I hate taking wet canvas home. All in all, a very enjoyable event.
The "cook’s fly" turned out to be a boon, and there is enough room under it to use as a "dining fly" also. I guess it makes a central place for the bees to congregate. Which brings me nicely to Corporal Lindberg’s new soubriquet – "The Bee Killer". One such beast was annoying 1st Sgt. Meiers to such an extent that when it alighted on Chip’s plate he smacked it with his finger tips – sans a sting, to boot!
The "Smoke Wagon" crew attended the Addison Fall Fest, along with Miss Rosemary, Pvt Jamie Smith (it was a relief to finally get his jacket and water canteen back to him), and me. As always, Qm. Sgt. Sheerer’s crew performed well, and entertained the few spectators who ventured down to the Civil War encampment. A few intelligent questions were asked and answered, along with the usual crop of not-so-intelligent questions (Do you really sleep in those tents? Are you really going to eat that?). Oh, well, I guess we ask for it, and we certainly get it!
Cedar Creek turned into the predicted cluster envisioned at 1st Manassas. However, "Smoke Wagon" was once again our sole attending gun (due in part to the unexpected winter storm that whacked the Buffalo area on Friday October 13). Those of us who attended had a great weekend. It was colder that Hades, but we managed to keep a smile on our faces. We even managed to get our canvas down dry, which was something of a minor miracle given the volume of rain that fell during the drive down, and threatened to fall on the tear-down. 10 of us stopped off in Gettysburg on the way home. What impressed me more than anything else throughout the event was the interaction and good humor shown by all attending.
I have booked the South Highbanks Pavilion for our End of Season Meeting/Party for Saturday, December 2nd. We picked this location as being approximately equidistant from the Buffalo/Rochester and Southern Tier areas. Thus no one has the "It’s too far away" excuse for not attending. We have access to the building from 9:00 AM until 10:00 PM, which should suffice for the meeting (set to start at or around 1:00 PM) and post-meeting knees-up. This also gives us ample time to get set up and organized. It would be appreciated if attendees would bring a couple of bundles of firewood with them. There is a fireplace in the building, but they do not provide wood. Also bring a dish to pass (savory and/or sweet), and whatever drinks you prefer for during and after the meeting. I shall be bringing my camp stove with me, and would appreciate it if others would do the same. Thus we will not be restricted to cold food or drinks when the outside temperature could possibly be in the subzero range. So I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on December 2nd.
From Rochester: Take I390S to the Mt Morris exit (#7). Turn left at the bottom of the off ramp, and follow the road into Mt. Morris. At the traffic light turn right, cross the Genesee River, and turn into the State Park at the Northern entrance. (This will cost you the princely sum of $6.) Follow the Park road past the Dam, and you will come to the Highbanks area (swimming pool on your left), adjacent to the Park police HQ. Turn in to the large car park, and follow your nose to the smoking chimney of the South Highbanks pavilion.
From Buffalo/Syracuse: Take the Thruway (East or West, as appropriate) to I390S, then as above. Or find another way, if you prefer.
From the Southern Tier: EITHER take I390N, then follow as above (it’s quicker than taking exit 6), OR, from Belmont/Andover area, take I86/US17E/W, as appropriate, to the Wellsville exit (Route 19), and follow 19N to the Park’s Southern entrance. Follow the Park road down past Glen Iris, then up the other side to the Highbanks area (swimming pool now on the right). Then as above.
At Cedar Creek Mike Karnitz announced his resignation as Battery Captain, and his intention of leaving Bedford Light Artillery following that event. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Mike for his great contribution to the running of this organization. It is an extremely sad moment for the Battery, but I am sure we all wish him well in whatever the future holds for him. The very best of good luck to you, sir!
I remain, as ever, very sincerely, your obedient servant,
Gordon Clifford

Cook’s Column
I want to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience with the meals and food allotments. I believe the shopping lists worked very well this year. The way we set up the shopping ensured that everyone had food and we had the appropriate items needed to prepare the meals as planned with the cost being shared evenly by everyone. Rosemary and I will continue to plan meals that will leave folks raving about the rations.
Once again, we are looking for suggestions for meals. If you have a favorite that you would like to see us do for next year, please let either Rosemary or me know.
You are a great team to feed. It is our pleasure to see the signs of contentment after a meal and the smiles on each and every face.
Thank you.
Miss LuAnn and Miss Rosemary
BLA will be doing a
Holiday Party – Combination Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, December 2, 2006. We will gather at the South High Banks Pavilion at Letchworth State Park. The Officers and NCO’s will be meeting at 10:00 am.
We are asking folks to
arrive around 12 noon with a dish to pass for a Pot Luck Luncheon. We plan on eating at 12:15. Miss Rosemary will bring a camp stove and suggests that anyone else who wishes to can do the same. This will help to heat up those hot dishes. Let’s see some specialty dishes that I know ya’ all have. Please bring your own place settings and beverages. Steaming coffee and tea will be provided. The general members
meeting will begin about 1:00 pm. Bring your ideas and energy to remember this past year and to plan for next year. With weather permitting, anyone who wishes to stay after the General meeting for socializing may do so. We have the pavilion for the evening until about 10:00 pm. There’s a suggestion of ordering pizza and wings for those who wish to stick around for supper. If you have some firewood to spare, please bring your wood to burn in the fireplace to keep the room warm and cozy.
It has also been suggested that for anyone interested, there will be a gift exchange for those who bring a $5.00 Christmas Ornament wrapped.
It has been an "off" year for some of the members. Let’s end the 2006 reenacting year with both feet on the ground. It would be wonderful to have everyone attend this end-of-year event.
A note that Miss Rosemary would like to share:
Mrs. Clifford,
Thank you so much for your hospitality at the campsite on Sept. 16th at "Longstreet camp". The conversation I had with your husband and colleagues was great. Also I wish to thank you for my son who needed some water at that time. The demonstration of Stribling's battery was outstanding!!!!!! I have already contacted Mr. Douglass and thanked him. I had a mini video sent to me by one of his cannoneers. I won’t be able to go to the Cedar Creek reenactment this year but maybe next time.
Again thank you;
Harry Paige

Correspondence from Alexander’s Battalion:
September 18, 2006
Capt. John Douglas, Capt. John Butler, Capt. Doug Taylor, Capt. Mike Karnitz:
Gentlemen:
Please forward this note of thanks to the members of your batteries.
On behalf of Alexander's Battalion leadership and staff I would like to extend my thanks to the batteries and individuals who put forth the effort to make this past weekend's living history, featuring Striblings Battery, on the grounds of the National Park at Gettysburg such a success. In spite of the rain on Saturday, the demonstrations drew reasonably good sized crowds of spectators who remained on site after the completion of the last firing to ask questions and approach the
guns for a closer look. Sunday proved to be warm and sunny with larger numbers of spectators. Our host, ranger Tom Holbrook, expressed his pleasure with the quality and safety of the demonstrations and extends his thanks to all present.
Capt. John Douglass and Lt. John Favors of Striblings Battery did a superb job coordinating the assignments of personnel into gun crews, which led to the successful fielding of the three guns available for use. Two guns were supplied by Striblings Battery and one gun was supplied by Cummings Battery. Personnel were supplied by Striblings Battery (Capt. John Douglass commanding), Cummings Battery (Capt. John Butler commanding), Bedford Light Artillery (Lt. Gordon Clifford commanding) and Taylors Battery (Sgt. Tom Hanson commanding).
Special thanks is extended to Maj. Mitch Landin for coordinating the event scheduling with the National Park Service at Gettysburg in order to make the event possible. Additionally, Maj. Landin initiated and presided over the NCWAA training sessions and gunners tests, which were held at this event for the first time. I was honored to assist in this effort. The results were 10 re-certifications, 4 new provisional, and 5 gunners.
Additional thanks are extended to Pastor Terry Routh for leading us in prayer Sunday morning and for offering such an insightful sermon.
Again, thanks to all participants.
Your Obedient Servant,
Lt. Col. Craig F. McCann
