Stribling’s Battery Schedule of Events for 2010

 

 

Jan 16:  Stribling’s Battery Party.  (Douglass Farm, Hume, VA)  Pot Luck Dinner, musician and period dancing. 

 

Jan 30-31:  Longstreet’s Corps and Alexander’s Battalion annual meetings.  (Winchester, VA)   Capt Douglass, Lt Favors, SgtMaj Swain will attend both meetings as the battery representatives. Best Western Lee-Jackson Inn & Conference Center, at Exit 313 off  I-81, Winchester, VA.    

 

Feb 20:   Battery Planning Meeting.  (Douglass Farm, Hume, VA)  Maximum participation requested to confirm the battery event schedule for 2009.  All arrive by 11:00 for pot-luck lunch followed by the annual planning meeting.

 

April 17 or 24:  Battery Work Day and possible NCWAA school of the piece.  (Douglass Farm, Hume, VA).  Focus is on maintenance of battery equipment in preparation for the 2009 campaign season.  Possible NCWAA school for certification/recertification to be held concurrently on Saturday, and Sunday if necessary.  Fee for certification is $5.00.  Possibility of live-firing small arms, cannon and the mortar.  Members who desire are encouraged to remain overnight on Saturday.

 

April 9-10:  38th Annual American Civil War Show.  (Fredericksburg, VA)  New days (Friday and Saturday) and new location (Fredericksburg Expo Center)  This annual show features over 350 tables of the finest Civil War and earlier military effects, memorabilia, relics, books, paper goods, photos, art, and antique weapons.  Friday 3-8, Saturday 9-4.  For information call Lewis Leigh Jr., (703) 771-3081.

 

April 10-11:  NCWAA School of the Piece at Jackson’s Mill.  (Westin, WV)  Annual certification school located on the grounds of Stonewall Jackson’s boyhood home.  Certification or recertification on all positions to include Gunner.  Minimum age is 14 for positions 5 & 6, 16 for positions 3 & 4, and 18 for positions 1 & 2.  Limited barracks style billeting available.  Registration fee is $12.00.   Deadline for registration is April 1.    

 

April 30-May 2:  NCWAA Artillery School at Ft. Niagra.  (Youngstown, NY)   22nd annual School of the Artillery and Infantry garrison at historic old Ft.Niagra.  Federal and Confederate artillery certification/recertification by the National Civil War Artillery Association.  Registration is $7.00.  Sponsored by Reynolds Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery.  For information and registration contact the event coordinator, John Beatty, jrbeaty21@aol.com.

 

May 1-2:  Brentsville Living History.  (Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre, VA)  (1 gun)  This event is an early war (1861) Confederate living history impression, with the 49th VA infantry, 4th VA Black Horse Cavalry, and artillery firing demonstrations.  POC is Rob Orrison, (703) 365-7895, or www.pwcgov.org/brentsville .

May 21-23:  145th Anniversary Spotsylvania.  (Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA)  (1 gun) *Corps Sanctioned Event.  Living history for 3000 school kids on Friday. Two battles per day 2:00 on Saturday and 1:00 on Sunday on part of the original battlefield.  This small event is a prelude for the 150th Anniversary event in 2014.  Artillery limited to 3 guns per side (Striblings, Bedford Light, and 4th Maryland) with a consolidated CS/US artillery camp. $200 per gun bounty.  ANV will galvanize for the entire event.  For information see http://spotsylvania.org/2010reenactmentdetails.htm. 

 

?May 9-10:  NCWAA Artillery School at Goldsboro Bridge Battlefield.  (Goldsboro, NC)  Federal and Confederate artillery certification/recertification by the National Civil War Artillery Association.  A good alternative school for those who live in southern Virginia and North Carolina.  Information regarding registration, deadlines, cost, billeting, etc. is forthcoming.   POC is Capt Bob Sydow at (252) 637-5057.

 

May 19-23:  N-SSA 117th National live-fire competition.  (Fort Shenandoah, Winchester, VA)   Uniformed competitors in member units competing in muskets, mortars, and cannon.  Largest Civil War live-fire event in the country.  For those who eventually want to live-fire the gun competitively, it is recommended that you attend this event and learn all you can about live-firing.  Free admission. 

 

May 30:   SCV Memorial Day Artillery salute.  (Warrenton, VA) (1 gun)  Artillery salute at Colonel Mosby’s grave at the Warrenton cemetery.  Muster at the cemetery at 1:00 pm, ceremony and salute goes at 2:00 pm.  Battery POC is SgtMaj Swain.  For information, Laurel Scott, rebelle1862@gmail.com.  This and Arlington Cemetary (see below) will require split battery operations with one gun and crew supporting each event.

 

May 30: Memorial Day salutes at Arlington National Cemetary.  (Arlington, VA)   (1 gun) Salute sponsored by the Lincoln-Cushing Camp SUVCW No 2 and recreates the 1872 Civil War Memorial Day reenactment.  We will portray Battery C, 1st Conn Heavy Artillery.  The cannon salute goes at 5:00 pm at the Lee Custis Mansion.  Event coordinator is Larry Fischer, U.S Artillery Reserve.

 

June 12-13:  Battle of Trevilian Station.  (Louisa, VA)  (1-2 guns)  Located at historic Bracketts Farm in Louisa, Virginia, this is a cavalry event featuring three battles.  Possible Stribling’s Battery horse-drawn gun debut.  PACs is the overall reenactor coordinator.  More information TBA.  Event website is http://www.trevbattleva.com/about .

 

June 26:  Fort Ward Civil War Camp Day and Skirmish.  (Alexandria, VA) **Stribling’s Battery Event.  (3” Ordnance Rifle, 24 lb Coehorn Mortar)  One day living history program, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include a small tactical that portrays typical fighting techniques and maneuvers.  Union and Confederate living history camps with a special activity every half hour (cannon drill and firing demonstrations, ordnance display, pay call, mail call, medical, reenlistment, civilian impressions,etc.).  One gun and mortar portraying Battey C, 1st Conn Heavy Artillery will fire from inside the restored bastion.  Female civilians can participate but must have a specific period impression to portray (e.g. laundress, officer’s wife, nurse, etc).  For information see www.fortward.org  and click on the icon for reenactors to take you to the program registration for the event.  POC at Ft. July 2-5:  147th Anniversary Gettysburg reenactment.  (Gettysburg, PA)  (X guns) *Corps Sanctioned Event.  This is a four-day event featuring battles each day (cavalry in the morning, all combat arms in the afternoon), mortar live-fire competition, living history activities, Independence Day artillery salutes.  Location returns back to the Redding farm (MAYBE) north of town on Table Rock Road.  Registration fee is $12 by March 15, $15 by June 1, $20 fee for walk-ons.  No substitutions after June 1.  Confederate Commander is Gen. Dave Cornett.  We will not be attending this year as a battery.   Those desiring to attend will have to register separately and fall in with another Alexander’s Battalion battery.  Federal Commander is Gen. Allen Baldwin.  Daily shuttle service from CSA camp to the sutlers. ?July 24:  Vienna Civil War Encampment.  (Vienna, VA)  (1 gun)  Set up on the Freeman Store Museum grounds as part of the first annual Vienna Historic Heritage Day.   Camp includes Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, Medical, and civilian demonstrations, and a Civil War immersion camp for kids.  This is a Non-firing event however, it is a good recruiting opportunity and a $200 bounty plus a free lunch is provided by the event coordinator.  POC at the Freeman Store is Pat O’Neil, (703) 938-3297.

 

Aug 14-15:  Sully Plantation Civil War encampment.  (Chantilly, VA)  (2 guns) Campaign camping, living history, camp life, firing demonstrations, skirmishes. Recommend this be a battery campaign camping event.  Sully Plantation Historic Site Events and Marketing Coordinator is Barbara Ziman, (703) 708-0861.

 

?Aug 14-15:  National Civil War Show.  (Richmond, VA)  “The Showplace”.  This is the largest Civil War show of the year in the DC area.  Guns, swords, period antiques, accouterments, personal items, prints, books, art, etc.  Saturday 9:00-5:00, Sunday 9:00-3:00. 

 

Sept 11-12:  Gettysburg living history.  (Gettysburg NMP Battlefield, PA)  ** Alexanders Battalion Event   (1-2 guns)  We will portray 4TH  Maryland Light Artillery along with 2 other guns from the battalion.  Firing demonstrations, camp life, camping and firing on the original battlefield (Pitzer’s woods on Seminary Ridge).  One of the best living history experiences.  Maximum battery effort for this event.  Possibility USFAA school  certification will be held concurrently.

 

 

 

Sept 25:  Warrenton-Fauquier Heritage Day.  (Warrenton, VA)  (1 gun) Warrenton’s Anniversary and Warrenton-Fauquier Heritage Day will be a combined celebration this year on Saturday, September 25.  More information to follow.  POC is Paula Johnson, (540) 341-7019. 

 

Sept 29-Oct 3:  N-SSA 118th National live-fire competition.  (Fort Shenandoah, Winchester, VA)  For those who want to live-fire competitively, this is the event to participate in.  Uniformed competitors in member units competing in muskets, mortars, and cannon.  Largest Civil War live-fire event in the country.  Free admission.

 

Oct 3:  Learning Tree Farm living history.  (Delaplane, VA)  (1 gun)  The Learning Tree Farm annual picnic features a variety of educational activities for kids including Civil War cavalry demonstrations, living history camp, period cooking, ordnance display, artillery driver display, and artillery firing demonstrations.  Large bounty for artillery (The bounty will help defray the cost of a new limber.) Oct 16-17:  146th Anniversary Battle of Cedar Creek Reenactment.  (Middletown, VA)  (2-3 guns) ***Longstreets Corps Event.  Best mid-size event of the year held on the original battlefield.  Longstreets Corps will be in Command.  Artillery limited to 20 full-scale guns on each side.  Express registration $15 until August 23, $25 after. ?Nov 20-21:  27th Annual Capital of the Confederacy Civil War Show.  (Richmond, VA)   Richmond Raceway Complex, 600 E. Laburnum Ave.  Over 400 exhibitor and museum displays, firearms, swords, personal effects, ordnance, etc. all for sale.  Saturday 9:00-5:00, Sunday 9:00-2:00.  Admission is $6 over age 12, under 12 free.  For info call  (804) 928-1006.

 

Nov 20:  Rememberance Day Parade.  (Gettysburg, PA)  Parade and memorial services.  Parade begins at 1:00, wreath laying ceremony at GAR monument at 2:00.  For information call (717) 334-1124 ext 431.  (We need to know in advance who plans to participate in the parade.)

 

? Dec 4:  Marshall living history and parade.  (Marshall, VA)  (1 – 2 guns) Participate in the Marshall Christmas Parade followed by living history presentation at the Marshall Community Center.  Sponsored by Company K, 8th VA Infantry.  POC is Sam Foreback,
