Battalion OPERATION ORDER 2009-1

Reporting for Duty

Gettysburg 2009

1.      Attention to Orders:  All registered Artillery Units are to report to Gettysburg no earlier than 0800 Thursday July 2nd, unless they have prior approval from Col. McCann.  All artillery units attending the Gettysburg 146th event are to submit the following information to the CS Artillery Adjutant no later than Monday June 15th.

    1. An ETA for the gun and crew
    2. If not already submitted, tentage information

2.      Command Structure: Due to the small number of guns registered this year (8) and the fact there are only seven units with guns, there will not be multiple battalions and there will not be pre-event formal creation of “four-gun” batteries. Each unit will maintain its autonomy and will only be joined with other units to form a larger entity (section, battery, etc.), as a field decision, if required by the CS Artillery commander to satisfy a given scenario. Unit commanders will report directly to CS Artillery command.

3.      Reporting for Duty:  The CS Artillery camp is expected to be the first CS military camp on the immediate left side of the re-enactment field entrance road directly across Pumping Station Road from the registration barn. After checking in at event registration, CS Artillery re-enactors are directed to report to CS Artillery HQ for assignment of camping spaces. Unit commanders should be prepared to notify Artillery HQ of the number of guns and personnel, which will be reporting for duty. Morning reports will be expected on Saturday and Sunday (time required to be announced at the event). No guns will be allowed on the field until the guns and their crews have passed a safety inspection.  The on site CS Artillery safety officer will schedule safety inspection during initial reporting to Artillery HQ.

4.      Billeting: Unless part of the CS Artillery command staff, artillery personnel will camp with their respective batteries.  Command staff will be assigned space in the command area as required. Assignment of space for unit camping will be made by Artillery commander/engineer within the space allotted for each battery.  No flys may protrude into the company streets.

5.      Mess: Each unit is expected to be responsible for their own sustenance and foraging as needed. There will be no special mess for command staff this year. Staff is encouraged to make arrangements with their respective home units or other arrangements for meals.

6.      Gun Park: The gun park is expected to be located at the foot of the CS Artillery camp along the main field road directly off Pumping Station Road.

7.      Parking and Towing: Each tow vehicle driver will be issued one pass for each gun.

    1. Gun Towing - All towing to and from the field will be via designated deployment and recovery routes at specific times. Unit commanders are requested to strictly comply with these orders. Deployment and recovery information for each scenario will be published in the daily Ops Orders.
    2. Gun trailer and tow vehicle Parking  - at this time we have been informed tow vehicles and gun trailers will be allowed to park inside to the left along the fence line paralleling Pumping Station Road. Exact location will be assigned on site.

8.      Daily Operations Orders: Artillery HQ will issue Operation orders for each scenario. These orders will contain maps for the area to be covered by each battery.  Additional operations orders may be communicated as needed.

9.      Current Logistics: 8 Cannon, 76 military and 27 military dependents are registered.  Tentage numbers- 1 Sibley, 13 wall tents, 49 large A-frame, 5 small A-frames and 15 fly’s as of this writing.

10.  Safety: Battery Commanders need to make sure their men are hydrated before taking the field and have a full canteen while on the field. Safety rules and regulations for CS Artillery at this event will be issued in a separate communication.

11.  “Volunteers”: Each unit will be expected to be ready to provide personnel to assist the Battalion Provost officer, Safety officer, and Sgt-Major as needed throughout the event.
