The conflict between the North and the South that tore apart so many
families also forged improbable alliances…..
Men of God, Angels of Death
brings to life the story of one such alliance between John E. Ramsey and
James Reilly. Ramsay,
descendant of a North Carolina farm family of Scottish origin, was a
surveyor and devout Presbyterian.
Reilly, an Irish immigrant, career artilleryman in the United States
Army, and devout Catholic, found himself stationed in Wilmington, North
Carolina when the war began.
Together these ‘Men of God’ –one whose southern roots reached back to
colonial times and the other a newcomer who grew to love the South –shaped
and led the Rowan Artillery, one of the premier units to serve in Robert E.
Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.
The author, Colonel Jack M. Travis, founder of Alexander’s Artillery
Battalion of Longstreet’s Corps and Chief of Artillery, 1996-2004, brings
the story to life from the perspective of an experienced re-enactor.
